You might be choosing to take a gap year between high school and post-secondary or after post-secondary before entering the “real world”. Either way, we want to remind you that this can be a great decision! Here are 4 ways you can take advantage of your gap year if you chose to take one!
Post Secondary can be very expensive, especially if you are planning on living on campus or moving to a new city. Your gap year is a great opportunity to financially prepare for your time at college or University. Set goals for yourself and cut down on your spending, it will pay off later. If you are able to save money now, you may not need to work as much or at all while you attend school which will make school a little bit less stressful. Set yourself up for that success.
Travelling is a wonderful way to gain life experience, learn more about yourself and curate and appreciation of what you have at home. It may just be what you need to discover your true passion and career path. Whether you just finished high school or post-secondary, taking a step back and breathing is always a great way to get in touch with your goals and aspirations in life.
You may not have done as well as you had planned in some classes. Now is the perfect opportunity to upgrade those marks. Retake any important prerequisite classes to ensure you get admitted into the program you want. Or, if you just finished post-secondary, this is a great opportunity to take classes in any other fields of study that have caught your curiosity.
Volunteer to explore career fields
This next step in your life comes with a lot of pressure. Pressure to start working or pressure to pick a field of study. Internships and volunteering allow you to explore other career fields and decipher between what you like and don’t like. By acknowledging and being able to realize your wants and needs, decision making will become much easier.
